Uzbekistan Sets Goal to Produce 10 Million Tons of Coal by 2025
Uzbekistan’s Coal Production Reaches Historic High in 2024
In a significant milestone for Uzbekistan, the state-owned company Uzbekkomir has achieved a record-breaking coal production of 6.7 million tons in 2024. This marks a substantial increase of nearly 15% compared to the previous year, showcasing the country’s growing presence in the coal industry. The Ministry of Mining and Geology reported these impressive figures, highlighting the success of Uzbekkomir in reaching new heights.
The primary driver behind this growth was the Angren coalfield, which contributed over 5.5 million tons to the total production. Furthermore, the Apartak coalfield achieved a personal best by surpassing 1.2 million tons for the first time. Uzbekkomir’s underground coal mining facility also played a significant role in this year’s success.
Over the past decade, Uzbekkomir has consistently expanded its coal output. Starting from under 4 million tons in 2016, the company’s production has steadily increased to 6.55 million tons in 2023, setting the stage for the remarkable performance in 2024. The company’s annual output trajectory reflects steady growth, with 2019 seeing 3.8 million tons, 4.78 million tons in 2021, and 5.84 million tons in 2023.
Looking ahead, the Uzbek government has set ambitious targets for coal production, aiming to reach 10 million tons in 2025 and ultimately achieve 20 million tons annually in the long run. Private sector contributions are expected to play a significant role in achieving these goals, with private enterprises projected to produce 900,000 tons in 2024.
Minister of Mining and Geology Bobir Islamov highlighted the importance of private sector involvement in the industry, emphasizing the need for increased investment and new projects to sustain growth. With Uzbekistan’s estimated coal reserves standing at 2 billion tons, the country is well-equipped with ample resources for future development.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has made expanding the coal industry a key priority as part of broader economic reforms. His directive to boost investment in the mining sector aligns with efforts to modernize production facilities and enhance efficiency, further solidifying Uzbekistan’s position in the regional energy market.
With its growing coal production capacity, Uzbekistan is not only meeting domestic energy demands but also positioning itself as a key player in the regional energy sector. The country’s coal industry is on a trajectory of continued growth and development, signaling promising prospects for the future.
