Uzbekistan Signs $4 Billion Cooperation Roadmap with AIIB for Infrastructure Projects in 2026
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan and Jin Liqun, President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), met in Samarkand today as part of the annual meeting of the AIIB Board of Governors. The focus of their meeting was on strengthening the strategic cooperation between Uzbekistan and AIIB, culminating in the signing of an updated roadmap for projects totaling over $4 billion.
The AIIB president expressed his gratitude to President Mirziyoyev for hosting the crucial event in Samarkand, emphasizing the bank’s unwavering support for Uzbekistan’s ongoing reforms in the New Uzbekistan era. He described these reforms as “irreversible” and reiterated AIIB’s commitment to supporting them.
During their discussions, both leaders highlighted Uzbekistan’s significant role as the primary beneficiary of AIIB projects in Central Asia, with a project portfolio exceeding $3 billion. Uzbekistan is now ranked as the sixth largest AIIB partner globally, based on operations.
The collaborative projects between Uzbekistan and AIIB, spanning various sectors such as transport, energy, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, utilities, and entrepreneurship, have played a pivotal role in the country’s development.
President Mirziyoyev proposed the development of a long-term Strategic Partnership Program with AIIB for infrastructure development until 2030. Key areas identified for cooperation include poverty alleviation, the construction of New Tashkent, support for public-private partnerships, and private sector reforms, especially in education, water, transport, and energy infrastructure modernization.
The leaders also discussed the importance of advancing large-scale infrastructure projects across Central Asia for regional development.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the updated roadmap for cooperation until 2026 was signed in the presence of President Mirziyoyev. This agreement encompasses ambitious projects totaling over $4 billion, solidifying Uzbekistan’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and promoting growth through collaboration with AIIB.
