Uzbekistan successfully concludes talks with South Korea to join WTO

Uzbekistan Completes Negotiations with South Korea for WTO Accession
The authorities of Uzbekistan have successfully completed negotiations with South Korea as part of their accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). The corresponding protocol was signed in Tashkent during the state visit of Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol.

“I would like to announce the completion of bilateral negotiations with the Republic of Korea within the framework of Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO, as well as the signing of the corresponding protocol in the presence of the leaders of the two countries,” stated Aziz Urunov, the special representative of the President of Uzbekistan on WTO issues.

The last meeting of the Working Group on Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO took place in May in Geneva. Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjayev emphasized that Uzbekistan aims to complete the process of accession to the WTO by the 14th Ministerial Conference of the organization in Cameroon in 2026.

Uzbekistan initially applied for WTO membership in 1994, leading to the creation of a working group at the same time. Despite a suspension of the process for 15 years after the third meeting in 2005, negotiations resumed in 2020.

The agreement with South Korea marks a significant milestone in Uzbekistan’s path towards joining the WTO and further integrating into the global economy. With continued efforts and collaboration, Uzbekistan is poised to enhance its trade relations and position on the international stage.
