Uzbekistan Targets 54% Renewable Electricity by 2030
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev Receives Briefing on Uzbekistan’s Energy Sector Development
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev recently received a detailed briefing on the progress of tasks and new projects in Uzbekistan’s energy sector. The meeting highlighted the country’s ambitious goals for the future, particularly in the field of renewable energy.
According to estimates, electricity consumption in Uzbekistan is projected to reach 121 billion kilowatt-hours by 2035. In response to this growing demand, the nation is aiming to increase the share of “green” energy in total generation to 54 percent by 2030. Among the most promising directions for renewable energy development are hydropower and nuclear energy.
In the coming years, Uzbekistan plans to construct 2,983 micro hydropower stations with a combined capacity of 167 megawatts. These projects are expected to generate 500 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity, saving 151 million cubic meters of natural gas. Additionally, the construction phase will create 1,200 jobs, while operational projects will provide employment for 520 individuals.
During the presentation, the Minister of Energy outlined the projects scheduled for implementation this year. It was announced that by 2025, 1,185 micro hydropower plants with a total capacity of 65 megawatts will be constructed, with many being launched by private entrepreneurs.
Looking ahead, nuclear energy is also set to play a significant role in Uzbekistan’s energy mix. The country is currently working on a project to build a small-scale nuclear power plant, with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) overseeing every stage to ensure compliance with global safety standards.
The president emphasized the importance of timely commissioning of these facilities to meet the energy needs of both the population and the economy. He instructed authorities to ensure that the planned projects are completed on schedule and that additional energy is supplied efficiently.
The developments in Uzbekistan’s energy sector signify a strategic shift towards sustainable and diversified sources of power, setting the stage for a more resilient and environmentally friendly energy landscape in the country.
