Uzbekistan to Approve Three International Agreements

Uzbekistan and Italy Ratify Agreements on Extradition, Prisoner Transfer, and Legal Assistance
The forty-seventh plenary session of the Senate of Uzbekistan recently considered and ratified agreements between Uzbekistan and Italy on extradition, prisoner transfer, and mutual legal assistance in criminal cases. The ratification of these agreements will pave the way for enhanced cooperation between the two countries in the areas of law enforcement and criminal justice.
The agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, signed in Rome on June 8, 2023, outlines the grounds and conditions for providing legal assistance in connection with the investigation of criminal cases and the implementation of other procedural actions. The agreement also defines the form and content of requests, grounds for refusal or delay of assistance, execution of requests, safeguards, security guarantees, and the transfer of criminal cases for further prosecution.
Furthermore, the treaty on the transfer of prisoners will establish a legal basis and opportunity for citizens of Uzbekistan and Italy to serve the sentences imposed by the court in their home country. The transfer of convicts will be carried out based on appeals from the contracting parties in accordance with established legal procedures.
Additionally, the extradition agreement between Uzbekistan and Italy specifies the grounds for each party to extradite persons wanted by the other party for the purpose of criminal prosecution or execution of sentences. The ratification of this agreement aims to increase the efficiency of trials and ensure the principle of inevitability of punishment for individuals who have committed crimes.
Following thorough discussion, the senators at the plenary session expressed their support for the ratification of these treaties, signaling a step forward in the cooperation and collaboration between Uzbekistan and Italy in matters of law and justice.
