Uzbekistan to Purchase Trains from Swiss Company Stadler
Uzbekistan is set to acquire two trains from the Swiss company Stadler as part of its plans to enhance the national railway network. Minister of Transport Ilhom Mahkamov announced the decision, stating that the trains will undergo trials on Uzbekistan’s railways before a larger fleet is considered for purchase.
During a Senate session on September 30, Minister Mahkamov emphasized the government’s intention to evaluate the performance of the Stadler trains before expanding the procurement. This move comes after a meeting between Minister Mahkamov and Alexander Luft, Chairman of Stadler Rail’s CIS division, on September 13, where potential cooperation opportunities were discussed.
The discussions with Stadler also focused on the company’s ability to meet Uzbekistan’s passenger rail needs, including the potential for localizing train production in Uzbekistan. In 2019, Stadler had explored the production of lightweight train cars in Uzbekistan and had participated in a tender to supply electric trains to Uzbekistan Railways.
In addition to the Stadler deal, Uzbekistan is also purchasing high-speed trains from South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem and electric trains from the Czech company Skoda. These acquisitions are being financed through loans totaling €535 million, guaranteed by the state.
Stadler Rail, headquartered in Switzerland, specializes in the production of regional trains and trams and operates in various countries worldwide. With the potential partnership with Stadler, Uzbekistan is looking to modernize its rail infrastructure and improve transportation services for its citizens.
