Uzbekistan’s $370 Million Healthcare Modernization Plan

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan is spearheading efforts to enhance healthcare quality and upgrade medical facilities in the country. During a recent meeting, proposals were reviewed to achieve these goals.
One significant development is the annual budget allocation of no less than 100 billion UZS for purchasing modern medical equipment for hospitals. In 2024, the healthcare sector attracted $200 million in foreign investments and $94 million in grants, enabling regional and district clinics to acquire essential MRI and CT scanners.
This year, the budget funding for medical equipment will double to 200 billion UZS, with plans to secure $370 million in foreign financing for the healthcare sector. For maternity facilities, the Asian Development Bank has allocated $100 million to purchase six ambulances with intensive care units and over 21,000 pieces of medical equipment across 45 categories.
Furthermore, clinics in Karakalpakstan and Khorezm will benefit from cardiovascular treatment equipment funded by €30 million from KfW. Additionally, the bank will provide €13.5 million for the construction of a state-of-the-art medical training center and dormitory in Termez.
President Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of upskilling doctors and medical personnel to effectively operate the new equipment. He also highlighted the need to increase the utilization of existing technology, noting that the average usage rate of angiography devices in regional clinics is currently only 34%.
To enhance the management of high-tech equipment in state medical facilities, initiatives involving outsourcing and public-private partnerships are on the agenda. These measures aim to ensure the efficient and effective utilization of medical resources to provide quality healthcare services to the population.
