Uzbekistan’s Declassified Archives Reveal Early 20th Century Secrets

In a recent development at the National Archive of Uzbekistan, 12 archives and 78 folders of documents from the pre-1917 period have been declassified. This information was shared during a press conference held by the “Uzarxiv” Agency on May 2.

During the last three months of 2024, the National Archive of Uzbekistan, in collaboration with the State Archive of the Republic, successfully digitized a significant amount of historical data. A total of 70.1 million frames were digitized from 1,030.0 thousand media carriers, marking a major milestone in preserving the country’s historical records.

The declassification of these documents opens up new avenues for scholarly research and sheds light on various aspects of Uzbekistan’s past. Among the declassified archives are records from key offices and agencies such as the Office of the Governor-General of Turkestan, the Russian Imperial Political Agency in Bukhara, and the Fergana Regional Administration.

Researchers and historians now have access to previously classified information that can provide valuable insights into the history and governance of Uzbekistan before 1917. This initiative is a significant step towards promoting transparency and enhancing our understanding of the country’s rich heritage.
