Uzbekistan’s Energy Shift: Declining Gas and Oil Production, Rising Coal and Electricity Output

Uzbekistan Sees Decline in Gas and Oil Production in 2024

In the first nine months of 2024, Uzbekistan experienced a significant decline in gas and oil production, according to data from the State Statistics Agency. Gas output fell by 4.8% and oil production by 7.3% compared to the same period in 2023.

Gas exports, however, surged by 16.5%, reaching $480 million since the beginning of the year. Despite the drop in domestic extraction, Uzbekistan’s gas imports also increased significantly, with the country importing $1.278 billion worth of gas between January and September 2024, nearly 3.6 times more than in the same period of 2023.

From January to September 2024, Uzbekistan produced 35.16 billion cubic meters of gas, marking a reduction of 1.67 billion cubic meters compared to the same period in 2023. Gas extraction figures for each month show a steady decline compared to the previous year’s data, with September 2024 recording a production of 3.55 billion cubic meters, down from 3.7 billion cubic meters in September 2023.

Uzbekistan’s gas production has been on a downward trend for several years, with output dropping by 9.6% in 2023. Despite this, coal production saw a 19.4% increase in the first nine months of 2024, reaching 5.33 million tons.

In terms of electricity generation, Uzbekistan saw a 4.3% increase, producing 60.3 billion kWh of electricity by September 2024. Fuel production also saw some changes, with diesel output rising slightly and gasoline production dropping over the same period.

Overall, the decline in gas and oil production in Uzbekistan in 2024 has been offset by the rise in exports and improvements in other sectors such as coal production and electricity generation. The country continues to navigate the challenges of managing its energy resources while meeting domestic and international demands.
