Uzbekistan’s Public Transport to Go Fully Cashless by 2025

Uzbekistan to Implement Cashless Payment System for Public Transportation

Starting from January 1, 2025, Uzbekistan is set to eliminate cash payments for public transportation, transitioning completely to an electronic payment system. The announcement was made by the Minister of Transport, Ilkhom Makhkamov, during an interview at the International Partnership Initiatives Week in Tashkent.

Makhkamov outlined that passengers will soon have the option to purchase tickets or QR codes for bus rides at kiosks located at bus stops. The new system is currently undergoing testing in Tashkent and will gradually be rolled out across the country.

“All buses will be equipped with devices to scan QR codes, eliminating the need for conductors and cash handling,” stated Makhkamov.

In addition to the shift to electronic payments, the Minister introduced a new “gross-contract” system, where public transport operators will be compensated based on the timely delivery of passengers rather than ticket sales.

As part of Uzbekistan’s modernization efforts, the country is poised to acquire 1,294 new buses, with a specific focus on expanding electric bus networks in major cities such as Tashkent and Samarkand. By 2030, the goal is to expand the fleet to 5,000 buses, including 2,000 electric buses, ensuring that public transportation services are accessible in all cities and districts throughout Uzbekistan.
