Uzbekistan’s Initiative for Global Code of Safe Tourism Approved by UN Tourism Executive Council
During the 121st session of the UN Tourism Executive Council, led by Ambassador Farrukh Tursunov, Uzbekistan’s delegation successfully proposed the creation of an Intergovernmental Commission to develop a Global Code for Safe Tourism. The initiative, unanimously approved, aims to address the challenges posed by conflicts and unstable situations in various parts of the world that negatively impact the tourism industry.
The idea to create a Global Code of Safe Tourism was first introduced by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during the 25th session of the UN General Assembly Tourism held in Samarkand in October 2023. The President highlighted the importance of establishing a unified approach to ensure the safety and security of tourists, emphasizing the need for a more sustainable and equitable tourism ecosystem.
The development of this code is seen as a significant step towards achieving these goals and is expected to become a valuable tool for sustainable tourism development worldwide. The code will include measures to protect the environment and preserve cultural heritage, promoting responsible tourism practices.
UN Tourism Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili commended Uzbekistan for its remarkable contribution to the organization’s activities, noting the country’s active participation in the global tourism industry. He praised Uzbekistan’s integrated approach to tourism development, citing it as a model for other countries in the region to follow.
The approval of Uzbekistan’s initiative reflects the country’s commitment to enhancing the safety and security of tourists, as well as promoting sustainable tourism practices on a global scale. The establishment of a Global Code for Safe Tourism marks a significant milestone in advancing the goals of the UN Tourism Executive Council and strengthening the tourism industry as a whole.
