Uzbekistan Sees Surge in Vehicle Imports from China
Uzbekistan has experienced a significant increase in vehicle imports, particularly from China, according to data from the Statistics Agency. From January to November 2024, the country imported vehicles worth a total of $1.18 billion, with the majority of imports coming from China.
A total of 68,684 cars were brought into the country during this period, with approximately 20,600 vehicles valued at $206 million imported in the autumn months alone. These numbers are comparable to the previous year, when around 73,000 foreign-made cars entered the market.
One notable trend in the import data is the rise in electric vehicle purchases. Uzbekistan imported 22,200 electric vehicles at a cost of $215.3 million, making up about 18% of the overall expenditure on vehicle imports.
China emerged as the dominant supplier of vehicles to Uzbekistan, exporting 55,700 cars, accounting for 81% of total imports. This also included the majority of electric vehicles, with 22,100 units coming from China. South Korea ranked second in vehicle imports, providing 11,200 vehicles, followed by the United States, India, and Japan.
In the electric vehicle category specifically, Kazakhstan emerged as the second-largest supplier after China, delivering 51 units. Other contributors included Hong Kong and Germany.
In addition to the increase in vehicle imports, Uzbekistan also implemented changes in its vehicle inspection regulations. As of November 1, imported cars are now required to undergo testing at the UzTest automotive proving ground in Pskent, instead of at customs. This change initially led to long queues, but an electronic queue system was put in place on November 18 to address the issue.
Overall, the surge in vehicle imports and the rise in electric vehicle purchases from China indicate a growing trend in Uzbekistan’s automotive market, with continued interest in foreign-made vehicles.
