Uzbekistan’s Vital Contribution During World War II
Uzbekistan played a crucial role during World War II (1939–1945), sending over 1.9 million of its citizens to the frontlines. At the time, the republic had a population of approximately 6.5 million. This immense contribution resulted in significant sacrifices, with 538,000 brave individuals losing their lives in the conflict.
Beyond its troop contributions, Uzbekistan served as an essential rear base for the war effort. The republic facilitated the establishment of 280 new industrial enterprises focused on military production. In addition, Uzbekistan became a sanctuary for more than 1.5 million evacuees, including around 250,000 orphaned children, who found safety and support within its borders.
Today, Uzbekistan honors its World War II veterans, with only 82 remaining who fought or were recognized as equivalent participants in the war. Among them is a remarkable 114-year-old veteran, a living testament to the sacrifices made during those tumultuous years.
In recognition of their bravery, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev recently signed a decree aimed at honoring these veterans. According to the decree, each participant of World War II will receive a one-time reward of $10,000. Those equated with WWII veterans will be awarded a one-time payment of 25 million UZS, a gesture of respect for their invaluable contributions.
