Venezuela restricts Argentine planes from using its airspace

Venezuela will not open its airspace to Argentina until compensation received

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, Yvan Gil, announced on his social media account that Venezuela will not open its airspace to Argentina until compensation is received for the damage caused by the seizure of a plane belonging to the Venezuelan airline Conviasa.

Gil stated that they had warned the government of Argentine President Javier Milei multiple times, accusing them of illegally damaging their company in order to please their protectors in the north. He made it clear that unless compensation is provided, no aircraft traveling to or from Argentina will be allowed to use Venezuelan airspace.

In response, Argentine Presidential Spokesperson Manuel Adorni announced at a daily press conference that diplomatic action would be initiated against Venezuela’s decision. Adorni mentioned that measures would be taken within the framework of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) due to the violation of the International Civil Aviation Convention.

The conflict dates back to August 12, 2022, when Argentina seized a Venezuelan plane at the request of the USA. The plane, originally bound for Caracas, Venezuela, encountered fuel shortages and failed to refuel in Uruguay due to airspace closures. It was later seized by US authorities for alleged violations of export restrictions related to Iran.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro condemned the seizure, claiming that the plane was “stolen” with the collaboration of Argentina and the USA. The media reported that the plane, ultimately delivered to the USA by Argentine officials, was dismantled into pieces.

The ongoing dispute highlights the strained relations between Venezuela and Argentina, with both countries facing diplomatic and legal repercussions for their actions in this aviation incident. The issue remains unresolved as both sides stand firm on their positions, creating tensions in the region.
