China’s Involvement in Uranium Mine Development in Uzbekistan

Navoiyuran, a state enterprise in Uzbekistan, has been working closely with the Chinese company China Nuclear Uranium Co. Ltd to explore and develop uranium deposits in the Auminzatau mountains. This collaboration aims to boost uranium mining and processing in the country.
The general director of Navoiyuran, Jamol Fayzullayev, recently met with representatives of China Nuclear Uranium to discuss the production of black shale uranium at the “Jantuar” and “Madanli” deposits in the Navoi region. Geological research has been conducted at the “Madanli” and “Koscheka” areas, with technological samples being studied at the “Madanli” deposit.
In line with the country’s efforts to increase uranium production, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved measures in July 2023 to double the production and processing of uranium raw materials by 2030. The target is set at 7,100 tons, compared to 3,526 tons produced in 2021.
Furthermore, Navoiyuran and the Chinese China National Nuclear Corporation have signed a memorandum of cooperation to collaborate on uranium mining and processing projects in Uzbekistan. This partnership opens up opportunities for investment and technological advancements in the uranium industry.
Overall, the joint efforts between Navoiyuran and the Chinese state-owned company signify a significant step towards enhancing uranium mining and processing capabilities in Uzbekistan, ultimately contributing to the country’s energy security and economic development.
