Vietnamese Ethnic Group Granted Status in Hungary by Election Committee
The National Election Committee in Hungary has certified a civil initiative to register Vietnamese as an ethnic group in the country. In order to be recognized as an ethnic group in Hungary, the law requires the existence of at least 1,000 individuals who identify as part of that group, hold Hungarian citizenship, and have voting rights in local elections.
Currently, there are 13 nationalities recognized as forming an ethnic group in Hungary, including Armenian, Bulgarian, Croatian, German, Greek, Polish, Roma, Romanian, Rusyn, Serb, Slovak, Slovene, and Ukrainian.
The committee has approved the initiative with a unilateral decision, giving the petitioner 120 days to collect the necessary 1,000 supporting signatures. The next step involves consulting the Hungarian Academy of Sciences to determine if the legal requirements have been met, and if so, the initiative will be presented to parliament for a decision on the registration of the Vietnamese ethnic group.
This development marks an important milestone in recognizing the diversity and contributions of different ethnic groups in Hungary. Stay tuned for further updates on this issue.
