Watchdog Raises Concerns About Food Pricing Communication in Hungary

Hungary’s Competition Office (GVH) has raised concerns over potential price increases in the food industry, stating that such announcements could lead to uniform pricing and go against free market competition. In a circular letter sent to professional organizations representing food producers and processors, GVH head Csaba Balázs Rigó urged recipients to review their communication practices to ensure they comply with competition laws.
The letter emphasizes the importance of promoting competition and avoiding actions that could contribute to inflationary pressure. GVH has given the recipients 60 days to voluntarily respond to the circular and outline steps to align their practices with competition-friendly standards.
GVH is closely monitoring price developments of certain products, such as eggs and dairy products, in specific supermarket chains. The watchdog has stated that it will intervene if necessary to ensure fair competition in the market.
This announcement from GVH comes as a reminder to the food industry to prioritize competition and consumer interests in their pricing strategies. It serves as a warning against practices that could harm competition and lead to negative consequences for consumers.GVH’s message is clear: fair competition is essential for a healthy and thriving food industry.
