WHO Discussing US Reentry with Washington
The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently engaged in discussions with the United States regarding the potential return of the country to the organization. This news comes as a ray of hope for global health initiatives, as the US has historically been a significant contributor to WHO’s operations.
Batyr Berdyklychev, the head of the WHO office in Moscow, has expressed optimism about the ongoing dialogue with the US. He described the conversations as open and constructive, highlighting the importance of the country’s expertise and institutional capacity in supporting WHO’s work.
The US has historically been the largest single donor to WHO, providing nearly one-fifth of the organization’s overall budget. Berdyklychev emphasized that vulnerable populations would be the most affected by a halt in US support to WHO. Despite these challenges, he assured that WHO would continue its operations with limited resources.
