World Architecture Festival Jury Names Best Building of 2023
The World Architecture Festival (WAF) 2023, held in Singapore, has recognized some outstanding projects with prestigious awards. New Atlas reports that the winners of the World Building of the Year, Landscape of the Year, and Future Project of the Year have been announced.
One of the winners, the Huizhen China High School, designed by Approach Design and the engineering design team of Zhejiang University of Technology, was praised for its innovative design. The school, located in Ningbo, features a “floating forest” area with raised classrooms connected by winding paths, greenery, and houses in the trees to provide students with a relaxing environment. According to the World Architecture Festival, the school offers students the opportunity for walks, fresh air, and reflection away from study, a departure from the typical educational institution setting.
Turenscape also received an award for its project, the “Begnacchi Forest Park,” which transformed a former tobacco factory site in Bangkok into a low-maintenance green park that collects stormwater, filters polluted water, and provides essential wildlife habitat in a busy downtown area.
In the Future Project of the Year category, the Probiotic Tower in Cairo by Design and More International was praised for being an environmentally friendly high-rise building that produces biofuel for the surrounding area. Judges highlighted the project for its potential to relieve urban sprawl, heat, and pollution.
Additionally, the WAF Award, which recognizes proposals that address global challenges, was given to Arup for its project exploring how oil rigs can be repurposed into sustainable offshore data centers as society transitions to a fossil fuel-free future.
The awards ceremony at the World Architecture Festival 2023 highlights the innovative and sustainable architecture and design projects from around the world, showcasing the creativity and vision of architects and designers in addressing pressing global challenges.
