US Airstrike Targets Houthi Militia in Yemen, Kills 70 Members Including Iranian Experts
A recent US airstrike in Yemen has resulted in the deaths of 70 members of the Houthi militia, including prominent field commanders and experts from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as announced by Yemen’s internationally-recognized government. The strike, which took place in the coastal area of Al-Fazah in the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, targeted a Houthi gathering.
Yemen’s Minister of Information, Moammar al-Eryani, revealed that the precise airstrike by US forces aimed at disrupting the Houthis’ plans to launch terrorist attacks against commercial vessels and oil tankers in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab Strait, and the Gulf of Aden. These attacks posed a significant threat to international maritime routes and global trade.
Al-Eryani highlighted that recent US airstrikes in Yemen have been successful in destroying military installations, fortifications, weapons depots, and defense systems, leading to the deaths of hundreds of militants, including high-ranking leaders. Despite the Houthi group’s efforts to conceal their losses and downplay the impact of the strikes, the operations have caused confusion within their ranks.
The Yemeni minister described these operations as a significant shift in the confrontation with the Houthis and emphasized that any threats to regional security and maritime corridors will not go unanswered. He also mentioned that more details regarding the airstrike will be released in the coming days.
While the Houthi group has yet to officially respond to the government’s claims, they have asserted launching multiple attacks on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea stated that they struck the aircraft carrier with cruise missiles and drones in recent days.
In response to the escalating tensions, Houthi-run al-Masirah TV reported two overnight US airstrikes on Saada province, the main stronghold of the group in northern Yemen. However, no casualties were reported.
The recent US airstrikes in Yemen were initiated to prevent Houthi attacks on commercial vessels and warships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The Houthis have stated that their attacks aim to pressure the US-backed Israel to cease the offensive against the Gaza Strip and allow humanitarian aid into the region.
