Zeytin the Baby Gorilla
The rehabilitation process of a baby gorilla caught in a cage-type box from Nigeria to Bangkok on December 22 continues in a zoo in Polonezköy. The gorilla cub, belonging to the almost extinct “gorilla gorilla” breed, is being closely monitored in a glass room at the zoo. Caregivers, after being disinfected, are allowed to enter the room wearing masks. The baby gorilla, who was initially shy and sad when caught, now spends his days very active, playing with blankets, plush toys, and an abacus in his room.
Fahrettin Ulu, the Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP) 1st Regional Director, highlighted the importance of protecting and developing wildlife. He mentioned that nearly 10 thousand injured animals were reported in Istanbul in 2024, and after the rehabilitation process, animals like deer, roe deer, fox, vulture, and eagle were released back into nature. Ulu stated that the gorilla cub was illegally transported in a small box under inhumane conditions, making it the first of its kind in Turkey. The cub is now under special protection in a zoo with a working permit, undergoing meticulous rehabilitation by its keeper and veterinarian.
Although the decision regarding the gorilla cub’s return to its homeland in Africa has not been finalized, efforts are being made to ensure a safe environment for its future. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, along with international organizations like CITES, are working on the process and will inform the public of any developments.
The gorilla cub, whose name has been determined as Zeytin through a social media campaign, has adapted well to its new environment. The caregivers, including veterinarian Gülfem Eşmen, spend their days with the gorilla, learning more about its behavior and dietary needs. Eşmen mentioned that the cub is in good spirits, enjoying milk, fruits, vegetables, and nuts as part of its diet. The gorilla treats its caregivers like family, playing games and wrestling with them, showing signs of self-confidence and independence.
The rehabilitation and care for the baby gorilla, named Zeytin, continue at the zoo in Polonezköy, ensuring its well-being and future prospects.
