SCO Eyes Observer Status with CIS Orient

Sergey Lebedev, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), has announced that there is a possibility of granting the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) observer status with the CIS. This decision is currently under consideration and was revealed during the International Economic Forum of the CIS Member States in Moscow.
The statement was made at the World Trade Center venue in Moscow, where the forum is taking place from March 28th to 29th. Mr. Lebedev emphasized that granting observer status to the SCO would enhance the connections between the CIS and the SCO. This status would enable the SCO to play a more active role in discussions related to regional security and economic cooperation.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation consists of 10 member states: Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. In addition to these member states, there are 2 observer states (Afghanistan and Mongolia) and 14 dialogue partners (including Azerbaijan, Armenia, and the UAE).
The potential collaboration between the CIS and the SCO holds promise for fostering greater cooperation and synergy in areas of mutual interest. With observer status, the SCO would have the opportunity to engage more closely with the CIS on various issues of regional importance.
