Restoration Work Begins at Gazi Mihal Bath Dating Back to the 15th Century
The historical Gazi Mihal Bath, situated on the banks of the Tunca River, is undergoing restoration work to preserve its unique architectural and cultural heritage. The project, which is part of ongoing efforts to preserve Edirne’s rich historical values, was visited by Governor Sezer, who is overseeing various restoration projects in the city.
Governor Sezer emphasized the importance of preserving historical buildings in Edirne, stating that the restoration of Gazi Mihal Bath is a priority. He highlighted the city’s rare historical values and the need to ensure that no historical building is left unrestored. The restoration project is being carried out with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and the Governorship.
Describing Gazi Mihal Bath as a building without compare, Governor Sezer acknowledged the challenges of restoring a historical bathhouse and mentioned the possibility of repurposing it as a museum or for another purpose. He also pointed out the structural issues, such as cracks in the walls caused by the nearby road, which need to be addressed before the interior restoration can begin.
The historical significance of Gazi Mihal Bath dates back to its construction in 1422, and it is considered a unique example of Turkish bath architecture from the 15th century. The bath, along with the Gazi Mihal Bey Mosque and Imaret Bridge, formed a social complex before being closed after the Russian occupation of Edirne in 1829.
The restoration of Gazi Mihal Bath stands as a testament to the commitment to preserving and celebrating the rich historical heritage of Edirne for future generations.
