209 Colombian Immigrants Deported from US Return Home
Colombian Immigrants Report Discriminatory Treatment in the USA
Immigrants from Colombia who were brought back to the International El Dorado Airport in Bogota have reported experiencing discriminatory practices in the USA. The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on their Twitter account in coordination with international organizations saying that they are helping the 209 vulnerable citizens. The immigrants were reportedly accused of smuggling cocaine and were denied their humanitarian needs while in detention centers in Texas.
One immigrant named Mabel, 33, planned to cross the USA to go to Canada but experienced inhumane treatment and discrimination. Another immigrant named Jerson intended to provide a better future for his family by working in the USA but faced worse treatment than he expected. He has decided to work as a carpenter in his home country instead.
The Ombudsman Office has obtained the necessary information from the immigrants about their treatment and started a study on this issue. Furthermore, Colombia announced on May 5 that it temporarily suspended its program to send back its nationals caught at the US-Mexico border to protest the USA’s treatment of immigrants.
These incidents highlight the ongoing issue of discriminatory treatment of immigrants in the USA. It is crucial for countries to work together to ensure that immigrants are treated fairly and with dignity.
