United Nations Warns of Dire Situation in Sudan
In a recent statement at the daily press conference, United Nations (UN) Spokesperson Stephan Dujarric shed light on the alarming crisis faced by children in Sudan. Dujarric emphasized that Sudan is currently experiencing the highest number of displaced children, with 5 million children forced to flee their homes due to conflicts.
The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a warning that 3.2 million children under the age of 5 in Sudan are at risk of acute malnutrition this year. This crisis has led to heartbreaking scenes of mothers embarking on treacherous journeys lasting up to 20 days in search of shelter and food. Families and communities are grappling with the burden of violence, exacerbating an already dire situation.
Dujarric stressed the urgent need for access to food and basic services, highlighting that any impediments could result in further loss of lives. The current conflict in Sudan, which began on April 15, 2023, between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (HDK), has left more than 20 thousand people dead. Despite numerous efforts to find a peaceful resolution, the war shows no signs of abating.
The repercussions of the conflict have been devastating, with over 3 million people fleeing the country and almost 9 million internally displaced within Sudan. Shockingly, more than 25 million people are now in desperate need of humanitarian assistance. The situation in Sudan represents one of the world’s largest displacement and hunger crises, underscoring the urgent need for international support and intervention.
