The trial process related to the collapsed buildings following an earthquake has resulted in several defendants being sentenced to prison for causing death and injury through conscious negligence. The lawsuits were filed against various parties involved in the construction and maintenance of the buildings, including contractors, surveyors, engineers, architects, building inspection officials, and building managers.
In the case of Rızabey Apartment, where the highest loss of life occurred, 13 defendants are currently on trial. Contractor Şerafettin Ağar and building technical officer Orhan Ayber were found guilty of causing death and injury through conscious negligence and were sentenced to 13 years and 4 months in prison.
In other cases, such as Doğanlar Apartment and Yılmaz Erbek Apartment, defendants received sentences ranging from 4 years to 18 years in prison for their involvement in the collapse of the buildings. Some defendants were acquitted, while others continue to serve their detention.
Unfortunately, in some cases, such as the Peace Site, where deaths and injuries occurred, no lawsuit could be filed as the suspects were not alive or could not be identified.
