489 International Observers Monitor May 14th Elections
International Election Observers Confirm Fair and Transparent Elections in Turkey
The international observation missions monitoring the General Elections for the President and the 28th Term Member of Parliament in Turkey have released their preliminary findings, confirming that the elections were held in accordance with international standards and were fair and transparent. A total of 489 international election observers were present to watch the elections held on 14 May 2023.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited international organizations, including the Council of Europe (EC) and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), to monitor the elections, as well as international observation delegations from other organizations. The authorities provided all kinds of cooperation to enable the observation missions to carry out their activities properly.
The reports of the observation delegations show that the elections were held with an exemplary participation and in accordance with the standards of free democratic elections. The International observers also confirmed that the elections in Turkey were secure, transparent, free, pluralistic, and fair.
After the elections, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Election Observation Mission (EOM) and the International Observation Mission (IGM), formed by OSCE and PACE observers, also announced their “Preliminary Findings and Results Report” and held a press conference. The report included the findings on the election process, but also expressed regret over some political statements that went beyond the election process and were incompatible with the principles of independent and impartial observation.
It is important to note that political analyzes and biased comments can damage the reliability of OSCE election observation missions. The international observation missions have confirmed that the elections in Turkey were conducted according to international standards and were fair and transparent.
