91% of South Koreans Say Denuclearizing the North Is Impossible

A new survey reveals that 91 percent of South Koreans believe it is “impossible” for North Korea to denuclearize. The survey, conducted by the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies and consisting of 1,043 participants, also found that 60.8 percent of respondents think it is unlikely for the United States to maintain nuclear deterrence on the Korean Peninsula due to the risk of being attacked by ballistic missiles. However, 39.3 percent of those surveyed believe it is likely that the United States would use nuclear deterrence to defend Seoul, despite the risk. These findings mark a shift from last year’s survey, where 77.6 percent of participants said they believed it was impossible for North Korea to be free of nuclear weapons. This information sheds light on the current sentiments and perceptions of South Koreans regarding denuclearization and nuclear deterrence on the Korean Peninsula.
