Abbas’ 3 Conditions for Palestinian Authority to Assume Control in Gaza
Mahmud Abbas, the President of the State of Palestine, recently gave an interview to the Egyptian “On” channel that was broadcast on Palestinian state television. In the interview, Abbas expressed his desire for the attacks in Gaza to cease and for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the region. He also called for measures to prevent Palestinians from being forced to leave their homeland.
Abbas stated that the Palestinian administration is prepared to fulfill its responsibilities in Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem, should Israel withdraw from Gaza. He emphasized that the Palestinian people are ready to assume their responsibilities and form a single Palestinian state.
The President highlighted the presence of Palestinian institutions, personnel, and youth in Gaza, as well as the substantial financial support the territory receives from the Palestinian administration. He also called for an international conference to be held to discuss the implementation of international legitimacy and the formation of a Palestinian state encompassing Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem.
Abbas accused Israel of attempting to prevent Palestinian rule in Gaza and expressed concerns about Israel’s plans to displace Palestinians from the West Bank and Gaza. He criticized the United States for its support of Israel and called for the world to acknowledge the plight of the Palestinian people and their right to live in independence.
The President also expressed hope that Gaza would recover from the recent conflict, despite the immense need for financial resources to rebuild the region. He emphasized the Palestinian people’s right to live and urged the international community to recognize their struggle for independence.
The interview comes at a time when the United States and Israeli leadership are at odds over the future administration of Gaza. While the Biden administration supports the post-war Palestinian administration taking over authority in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects this option and seeks to maintain responsibility for Gaza’s security. The situation remains complex as efforts to achieve a ceasefire and plan for the post-war recovery continue.
