Activist Melis Aspekov Receives Seven-Year Prison Sentence

Bishkek Activist Sentenced to Seven Years in Prison

Bishkek – The Pervomaisky District Court of Bishkek has sentenced activist Melis Aspekov to seven years in prison, as confirmed by his son Aaly on Facebook.

During the trial, Aspekov made his final statement, emphasizing that he did not have any intention of inciting riots. Despite consistent testimony from witnesses supporting his claim, the court, allegedly under political influence, handed down a seven-year prison sentence.

Aspekov was found guilty of preparing and participating in mass riots. He was known for being a close ally of President Sadyr Japarov.

This is not the first time Aspekov has faced legal troubles. In March 2022, he was convicted of extortion and fraud, resulting in a seven-year prison sentence. After appealing the verdict, the Bishkek City Court upheld the decision but reduced the term to six years.

After being released on a presidential pardon in May 2023, Aspekov was once again detained in September on charges related to organizing riots. He is currently being held at the pre-trial detention center No. 1 in the capital.

The case of Melis Aspekov highlights the complexities of activism and legal challenges in Kyrgyzstan. It also raises questions about political influence on the judiciary system.
