ADB to aid Turkmenistan’s green makeover with renewable energy initiative
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced plans to offer technical support for a project in Turkmenistan that aims to implement integrated renewable energy solutions to accelerate the country’s transition to a “green” economy. This initiative, as reported by Trend citing the ADB, is set to enhance Turkmenistan’s environmental sustainability and position it as a key player in the global shift towards renewable energy sources.
A key objective of the project is to devise a comprehensive roadmap for the deployment of solar energy, including the establishment of innovative “smart” and “green” cities such as the planned city of Arkadag. The project will involve assessments, feasibility studies, and the launch of a pilot solar power plant in an urban setting.
The pilot project is projected to produce more than 4 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually, leading to a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by over 3,000 tons per year. Turkmenistan’s ambition to transition to renewable energy sources will create new prospects for economic diversification, decrease carbon emissions, and open up new export markets, such as the development of “green” energy corridors linking Central Asia to Europe.
This initiative marks a crucial step towards a sustainable future for Turkmenistan, showcasing its commitment to embracing clean energy technologies and contributing to global efforts in combating climate change.
