ADB to Expand Energy Cooperation with Azerbaijan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is poised to enhance its partnership with Azerbaijan in the energy supply chain, with a focus on establishing a secure and efficient energy infrastructure that can last for generations to come. This commitment was highlighted by Joonho Hwang, Director of the Energy Sector Department at ADB, during recent ministerial meetings in Baku related to the Consultative Councils for the Southern Gas Corridor and “green energy.”
Hwang emphasized that ADB’s energy policy is centered on ensuring reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions while upholding environmental standards. He stressed the importance of prioritizing energy security in the face of climate change and global shifts, not only for individual nations but for the entire region as a foundation for stable economic development. The significance of the Southern Gas Corridor as a crucial route for enhancing energy resilience, diversifying supplies, and stabilizing markets has increased in light of ongoing uncertainties.
The strategic roles of Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey as ADB member countries and key stakeholders in the Southern Gas Corridor project were also highlighted by Hwang. He praised ADB’s longstanding support for the corridor, particularly citing a substantial partial loan guarantee of over $500 million for the second phase of the Shah Deniz field development, which contributed significantly to reducing costs, attracting private investments, creating job opportunities, and bolstering regional energy security.
Hwang underlined the importance of striking a balance between meeting current energy demands and achieving long-term environmental sustainability. He called for a focus on developing clean energy infrastructure and enhancing the efficiency of energy systems, pointing out that in conjunction with the “green corridor” project and other renewable initiatives, the Southern Gas Corridor has the potential to lay the groundwork for a new energy landscape that is sustainable, adaptive, and future-oriented.
