Advancing Inclusive Education in Turkmenistan: UNICEF and Ministry of Education Collaboration

The Ministry of Education in partnership with UNICEF in Turkmenistan is making strides in advancing inclusive education through a recent intensive training program for educators, administrators, and multi-sectoral professionals in Ashgabat. The training, held from 20 to 24 January, focused on equipping participants with the skills to implement inclusive practices and develop individualized education plans for children with disabilities.
Participants in the training sessions delved into tools for assessing children’s specific needs, enabling personalized learning approaches and creating an inclusive education environment. The importance of multi-disciplinary teams consisting of teachers, childcare professionals, and parents was emphasized in building comprehensive support systems for children with disabilities. The identification of necessary assistive technologies will further enhance children’s participation in education.
Furthermore, international experts collaborated with the national team of engineers to assess the physical infrastructure of selected education facilities in Ashgabat for accessibility to children and adults with disabilities. The recommendations from this assessment will guide infrastructural improvements to foster an overall inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities.
Filomena Perreira, UNICEF international expert, commended Turkmenistan for its commitment to inclusive education and highlighted the country’s leadership in cross-sectoral collaboration to build sustainable and inclusive systems. The progress and dedication of the education sector and its specialists were praised by Perreira.
The efforts of the Ministry of Education and UNICEF in Turkmenistan underscore the importance of creating inclusive educational environments that support the integration and improved learning outcomes of all children, regardless of their abilities.
