AK Party’s Major Reforms – Türkiye News Update

Decision Week in Istanbul

The 8th Ordinary Congress of the AK Party has reached its final bend, with the congress process starting on November 30th last year and concluding on February 8th with the Istanbul Congress.

During this process, 20 Provincial Chairmen were appointed to replace those who resigned for the nomination of deputies in the 2023 general election. Following the general election, 16 provincial chairmen were changed after the local elections on March 31st. In total, the president of 70 provinces was changed in the two-year period.

The AK Party is now gearing up for the 8th Ordinary Congress, which will be held in Ankara on Sunday, February 23rd. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will spend most of this week finalizing the list of the Central Board of Directors (MYK), the party’s main decision-making body, in Istanbul.

Reports suggest that the last VQA meeting, which was planned with the current squad on Monday, was canceled due to the intense calendar. The new MYK criteria will be based on gender, profession, and regional representation, with a focus on strengthening the party and parliamentary bond to increase the number of deputies.

During the congress, some names transitioning from the GOOD Party to the AK Party may be included in the list of the MKYK, while Erdogan himself will inform some MYK members. There is also speculation about a potential change in the cabinet, with Erdogan emphasizing the establishment of a dynamic structure. While a cabinet change may not happen immediately after the congress, sources suggest that it could take place in June or autumn later in the year.
