Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Akylbek Japarov, recently addressed allegations surrounding his wealth and income. In response to a comment on his Facebook post questioning his source of wealth, Japarov stated that his wife had paid 1.2 billion soms in taxes.
Earlier, Japarov had claimed that crime would no longer exist in Kyrgyzstan and that the country would become an attractive destination for foreign investors. However, a concerned citizen raised doubts about his personal financial gains during his tenure in the civil service, going as far as asking for his resignation.
Japarov swiftly responded to the query, saying, “Why do you need this? My wife paid taxes in the amount of 1,200 billion soms.”
The State Service for Combating Economic Crimes had previously flagged non-payment of taxes by Kantskaya MIS, including its shareholders, in October 2020. Notably, Japarov’s wife, Anara, and the Maltese offshore company, Eurasia Capital Limited, were among those mentioned. As per the state service, Eurasia Capital Limited held 98.3 percent of MIS shares as of March 10, 2021. However, no such organization is registered in the Ministry of Justice database, although its name is listed in the offshore database of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).
Additionally, it has been revealed that Anara Japarov also owns Tridas LLC, a company involved in the supply of confectionery products in Kyrgyzstan. This information was verified and published on the official website of the Ministry of Justice.
The allegations and responses raise questions about the transparency and legality of the financial affairs involved. The public awaits further clarification, as it remains pivotal to carry out a thorough investigation to address citizens’ concerns and ensure accountability among top government officials.
With ongoing developments, it is crucial for the government to prioritize transparency, combat corruption, and bolster public trust in the country’s leadership.
