Algerian Minister Calls for Full Membership for Palestine in the UN
Algerian Foreign Minister Attaf recently spoke at the “Middle East” session held at the ministerial level of the UN Security Council. During his address, Attaf emphasized the importance of granting Palestine full membership in the United Nations.
“It is time to make Palestine a full member state of the UN,” Attaf stated, highlighting the need to revitalize the peace process in the region. He expressed that granting full membership to Palestine would help protect the two-state solution from the various challenges it currently faces.
Attaf reiterated that Palestinians have the historic right to establish their own state and urged the Security Council to take urgent action in implementing the two-state solution. He also criticized Israel for its continued occupation and the promotion of false hopes regarding peace in the region.
The issue of Palestine’s membership application to the UN has been ongoing since 2011. Although Palestine was granted observer status in 2012, its application for full membership has yet to receive the necessary support in the Security Council. In April, Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Riyad Mansur, requested a reconsideration of the membership application.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also called for Palestine’s request to be put on the agenda, leading to discussions in the Security Council. However, the Committee for the Admission of New Members was unable to reach an agreement after two meetings, delaying further action on the issue.
The debate surrounding Palestine’s full membership in the UN continues, with calls for increased support and action to address the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As the international community grapples with finding a lasting solution, the voices advocating for Palestinian rights and statehood grow stronger.
