Eve Power’s Battery Factory in Debrecen Receives Environmental Permit
Eve Power, a major supplier to BMW, has announced that its battery factory in Debrecen, eastern Hungary, has received an environmental permit. The Chinese company stated in a press release that the Debrecen plant will be built using special technology that conserves water resources, not only in Hungary but also globally.
According to reports from haon.hu, the company mentioned that this new technology will allow the industrial use of treated wastewater, reducing the need for drinking water in the production process. Furthermore, the city authorities are implementing measures to protect residents from pollution, including a restriction that factories can only use 5% of clean drinking water supplies.
Eve Power emphasized its commitment to working in partnership with the city’s residents in a sustainable manner in the long term, aiming to be a good neighbor. The construction of the Debrecen plant will consider the experience gained from operating existing plants and will include an R&D base.
The Debrecen plant will have a significant impact on BMW’s operations in the city, as the batteries produced there will be a key component of the Neue Klasse BMWs. The collaboration between Eve Power and BMW followed extensive negotiations between the two companies.
Moreover, the Hungarian government, the city of Debrecen, and local authorities have been clear about prioritizing environmental and industrial safety aspects and complying with stricter rules than those of the EU.
In May 2023, the world’s ninth-largest battery manufacturer announced plans to build its first European plant in Debrecen, with an investment of approximately HUF 400 billion (EUR 980 million) and the creation of over 1,000 new jobs. Construction of the plant began in 2023, and it is expected to start operations in 2026.
