Russian Forces Shell Ukrainian City, Causing Casualties and Damage
On November 22, Russian forces shelled the city of Nikopol in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, causing casualties and damage, according to regional Governor Serhiy Lysak. The attack also resulted in damage to infrastructure, including power lines and a gas pipeline. The shelling left more than 1,200 families without electricity and caused injuries to two civilians.
This is not the first time that Nikopol has been targeted by Russian artillery and drone strikes. In a statement, Ukraine’s air defenses reported that they had successfully shot down 14 Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles launched by Russia in several regions overnight.
In response to the Russian attack, Ukraine’s 128th Separate Mountain Assault Transcarpathian Brigade reported striking a building in the village of Kumachovo in the Donetsk region, where Russian forces were said to be celebrating the Day of Missile Forces and Artillery on November 19. The strike reportedly resulted in the deaths of 25 troops, as well as Russian director and actress Polina Menshikh, who had come to perform for the troops. Similarly, on November 5, 19 members of the Transcarpathian Brigade were killed in a missile strike during a ceremony held in a frontline position in southern Ukraine.
The Russian Defense Ministry asserted that their air-defense units had destroyed three Ukrainian drones over occupied Crimea and four Ukrainian naval drones. However, the claims could not be independently verified.
On the battlefield, Ukrainian forces reported 48 close-quarter battles along the front line over the past 24 hours, with the General Staff of Ukraine’s military stating that Russian assaults had been repelled in several regions including the Donetsk region. Germany has pledged a further 1.3 billion euros in military aid for Ukraine, including additional powerful air-defense systems and artillery ammunition.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in significant humanitarian and military casualties, with both sides engaging in warfare that has devastated communities and infrastructure. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community is closely monitoring the developments in the region.
