Armed Attack on Consulate General of Iraq in Istanbul
A shocking armed attack took place in the Esentepe neighborhood at the building of the Consulate General of Iraq in Istanbul. Two suspects on a motorcycle opened fire with long-barreled weapons at the building. Following the attack, the suspects fled the scene but one of them was injured in the incident. Police teams immediately arrived at the scene after receiving notice of the attack.
As a precautionary measure, the police tightened security around the Consulate General building. Authorities started working to apprehend the suspects who managed to escape.
District Governor of Şişli, Cevdet Ertürkmen, visited the consulate building after the attack to gather information from the officials. In a statement to the press, Ertürkmen expressed his condolences and solidarity with the Iraqi State, saying “get past” in reference to overcoming this difficult situation.
In response to the attack, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning the act of violence. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli confirmed the incident and assured that no casualties or damage to property occurred during the attack. Keçeli also mentioned that an investigation is ongoing to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Furthermore, Keçeli stated that the Iraqi officials have been in constant communication with Turkish authorities to ensure the safety and security of Iraq’s diplomatic missions in Ankara, Istanbul, and Gaziantep.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs extends its condolences to the Iraqi people and assures that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of diplomatic missions in Turkey.
