Austrian Company’s Project for Tashkent-Samarkand Toll Road

The construction of a new toll road between Tashkent and Samarkand is set to begin, with the project being developed by Austrian ILF Consulting Engineers Austria GmbH. The six-lane highway will stretch over 305 km and is designed to have a service life of 25 years.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has allocated a grant of $350,000 to develop an initial feasibility study for the project, with a total of $1.5 million being provided for its creation. Turkish Proyapı Mühendislik ve Müşavirlik A.Ş has been brought on board to implement the project.

The toll road project will not only involve the construction of the highway but also the building of new bridges and overpasses, and the introduction of an intelligent transport system. The route will be able to accommodate 13 tons, meeting international standards.

Plans for toll highways in Uzbekistan were first announced in 2018. The Tashkent-Samarkand toll highway was originally planned to be constructed by German GP Günter Papenburg. However, it was later decided that the construction would be carried out by a consortium of Cengiz Enerji, Kalyon, and Kolin, with the EBRD urging for the work to begin sooner.

In addition to the Tashkent-Samarkand toll road, a toll highway is also planned between Tashkent and Andijan, passing through an alternative tunnel on Kamchik. Another toll road is set to be built from Samarkand to Shakhrisabz, featuring a tunnel at the Takhtakoracha pass.

The PPP Development Agency has estimated the toll for travel on these roads to be between $5-6 for passenger cars, with a maximum speed limit of up to 150 km/h.

The new toll road projects are expected to significantly improve the country’s infrastructure and provide more efficient and modern transportation options for the people of Uzbekistan.
