Azerbaijan Applies to Join BRICS Bloc
Azerbaijan has officially applied to join the BRICS bloc of developing economies, according to a statement from the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry. The announcement was made on August 20 by spokesman Aykhan Hajizadeh, just a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the South Caucasus country.
BRICS, an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is an association of five major emerging national economies. The bloc represents about 42% of the world’s population and approximately 23% of global GDP. With Azerbaijan’s application, the group could potentially expand its influence in the region and strengthen its economic and political power.
Azerbaijan, a country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, has been focused on diversifying its economy and building partnerships with other emerging economies. Joining BRICS could open up new opportunities for trade, investment, and cooperation with member countries.
