B-52 Aircraft stationed in Guam Capable of Nuclear Warfare
B-52 Stratofortresses aircraft from the 2nd Bomber Squadron, stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, recently arrived at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam in October 2023. This deployment is part of the Bomber Task Force missions, which aim to demonstrate the reliability of U.S. Forces in addressing the diverse and uncertain global security environment of the present time.
According to Pacific Air Forces, the deployment of the B-52s supports the goals of the National Defense Strategy in terms of creating enduring advantages and integrated deterrence. This modernization effort aims to give the B-52s “fighter-like” radar capabilities, enhancing their navigation accuracy, targeting, and tracking capabilities. The new radar will also provide high-resolution mapping and the ability to engage multiple targets simultaneously.
The AESA radar technology will replace the outdated radar systems from the 1960s, significantly improving the B-52’s capabilities. Bomber Programs Director Jennifer Wong highlighted the importance of modernizing the B-52’s radar, as it plays a crucial role in the U.S. Air Force’s transition to a future two-bomber platform strategy.
