Bangladesh opposition protests 12th general election
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Vecid of Bangladesh has stated that the country’s election should be conducted under the supervision of the government, as mandated by the constitution. However, this has led to widespread protests and tension ahead of the election, with opposition parties calling for boycotts.
From October 28, 2023, protests have erupted across Bangladesh, led by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), seeking to oppose the current government’s control over the election process. Opposition parties have demanded the formation of an interim and “neutral” government to oversee the elections, but the government has rejected this request, leading to continued boycott threats from the BNP.
The run-up to the election has seen more than 24,000 people who support the BNP detained, sparking allegations of government suppression by the opposition. Security forces have been deployed to maintain security and peace during the election.
The BNP has announced a 48-hour strike, including the day of the election, and has called for public support. The party has continued to voice its disapproval of the election process and accused the government of unfair practices.
Despite the protests and boycotts, Prime Minister Hasina has urged the people of Bangladesh to cast their votes in the upcoming election, expressing her hope for a peaceful and fair electoral process. She has also appealed to other political parties and institutions to maintain a democratic and lawful approach during this time.
The tension leading up to the 12th general election in Bangladesh has also attracted international attention. A delegation from Japan will observe the elections, aiming to support the fair implementation of the electoral process, highlighting the significance of these elections on a global scale.
The election is seen as crucial for Bangladesh, especially as the country faces economic difficulties and political turmoil. Prime Minister Hasina, often regarded as the “iron lady” of Bangladesh, aims to win her fifth term as the leader despite growing opposition and challenges facing her government.
