Bishkek Court Extends Pretrial Detention of President’s Niece’s Boyfriend
The largest prisoner swap since the end of the Cold War has been successfully carried out by Russia, the United States, and several other countries. This historic exchange freed 16 individuals from Russian and Belarusian prisons, including RFE/RL journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, and Michigan corporate security executive Paul Whelan. In return, eight Russians were sent back home.
U.S. President Joe Biden commended the exchange during a White House news conference on August 1, thanking the families of the Americans who had been detained. Biden described the diplomatic efforts that facilitated the swap as a remarkable achievement, highlighting the end of the brutal ordeal faced by those wrongfully accused and imprisoned.
Among the freed individuals was dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza, a dual Russian-British citizen who had been imprisoned for criticizing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The emotional reunion of the families, including Kurmasheva’s husband and daughters, was a touching moment as they spoke to their loved ones on the phone from the Oval Office.
The prisoner swap required significant concessions from Germany, which released FSB Colonel Vadim Krasikov, convicted of a murder in Berlin. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the difficult decision to release the hit man, balancing the state’s interests with the safety of innocent individuals.
The exchange involved several countries, with Turkey playing a major mediation role. The negotiations led to the release of individuals imprisoned in various countries. State Department spokesman Vedant Patel praised the multi-country swap as the largest of its kind, ensuring the return of Americans to their families.
The news of the prisoner swap was met with mixed reactions from U.S. lawmakers, with some expressing concerns about the perceived cost. Senator Jim Risch and Representative Michael McCaul raised issues about trading innocent Americans for Russian criminals held in the U.S.
Speculation about the swap grew as defense lawyers reported their clients’ uncertain whereabouts in Russian prisons. The swap was evident through flight tracks and movements of special Russian government planes, signaling the commencement of the exchange.
