Blue Tongue Outbreak in Osmaniye Prompts Quarantine – Late Breaking News from Türkiye

Bluetongue Disease Detected in Kadirli District

The Kadirli District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry has announced that bluetongue disease has been detected in the district. This disease, which has spread in Europe and can result in death in sheep, goats, cattle, and cows, was identified through checks carried out by veterinarians and laboratory test results.

As a precautionary measure, the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry has decided to stop the purchase, sale, and shipment of cattle and sheep in several villages and the Kadirli Animal Market. The affected villages include Harkaçtığı, Yusufizzettin, Şabaplı, İlbistanlı, Kösepınarı, Karakütük, Koçlu, Yoğunoluk, Değirmendere, and Tahta. It is important to note that bluetongue disease is not a zoonotic disease, meaning it is not transmitted from animals to humans. The quarantine measures being implemented are aimed at protecting animal health.

In response to the situation, the Kadirli Municipality Police Department has closed the live animal market until further notice after carrying out necessary actions.

Bluetongue disease is caused by a type of mosquito and is characterized by symptoms such as high fever, loss of appetite, joint pain, milk curdling, miscarriage, and respiratory problems in animals. It is crucial for livestock owners in the affected areas to stay informed and take necessary precautions to prevent the spread of this disease.
