Brazil Flood Disaster Death Toll Climbs to 76

Severe Flooding in Rio Grande do Sul Leaves 76 Dead and 103 Missing

The state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil has been devastated by floods following heavy rainfall at the beginning of the week, leading to a tragic loss of life and property.

According to a statement released by the state’s Civil Defense, the death toll has risen to 76, with 103 people reported missing. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited the disaster area for the second time, pledging that humanitarian aid will be delivered without any obstacles.

President Lula da Silva also vowed to rebuild the damaged roads and public buildings, stating, “Bureaucracy will not stand in the way of restoring this province. I pray that there will be no more rain.”

Reports from local media indicate that 421 thousand individuals have been impacted by the floods, with 115 towns experiencing disruptions in telephone and internet services. Thousands have been forced to evacuate as homes and lands have been inundated.

Despite ongoing rescue efforts, there are still areas that remain inaccessible, raising concerns that the number of casualties could rise further.

Governor Eduardo Leite declared a “state of disaster” for 180 days on May 3, citing the unprecedented nature of the catastrophe. He emphasized the need for urgent evacuation efforts given the gravity of the situation.
