BRTK Rejects Extension of UN Peacekeeping Mission Term
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has released a statement expressing its rejection of the decisions made by the United Nations Security Council regarding the Greek Cypriot side of Cyprus. The TRNC authorities do not accept the Security Council’s decisions and have described the situation as unfortunate.
In the statement, the Ministry criticized the Security Council for extending the term of the United Nations Peace Force in Cyprus without the approval of the Turkish Cypriot side. The Ministry emphasized that the references to the outdated “two-communal, two-cut federation” model are no longer valid and called for a new approach based on the equality and separate existence of the Turkish Cypriot people and their state.
The Ministry also raised concerns about the behavior of the United Nations Peace Force personnel, particularly towards refugees in the buffer zone, and the lack of equal treatment towards both sides by the Greek Cypriot police. The Ministry highlighted the need for a fair and balanced approach that takes into account the military activities and violations by the Greek Cypriot side.
