Canadian Parliamentarians Assist Mongolian Government
A new era of collaboration between Mongolia and Canada is on the horizon as Honourable Bryon Wilfert, Mongolia’s honorary consul in Canada, organizes a unique initiative to bolster Mongolia’s democracy. A delegation of former Canadian parliamentarians, organized by the Canadian Association of Former Parliamentarians (CAFP), will visit Ulaanbaatar in September 2024 to engage with their Mongolian counterparts.
This initiative comes at a crucial time for Mongolia, following a surprisingly competitive June election that saw a significant reduction in the ruling party’s majority. While the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) secured a third consecutive victory, smaller parties gained ground, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape. The introduction of a new proportional representation system has also added diversity to the parliament.
Recognizing the importance of building robust democratic institutions beyond elections, the CAFP’s mission aligns with the initiative to promote democratic values and support former parliamentarians. By facilitating dialogue and knowledge sharing, the delegation of former Canadian MPs aims to offer practical insights into navigating Mongolia’s evolving political landscape.
Drawing from Canada’s parliamentary system, known for its emphasis on coalition-building, compromise, and robust checks and balances, the delegation will focus on peer-to-peer learning and sharing best practices. Discussions will cover topics such as managing coalition governments, strengthening parliamentary committees, and engaging with civil society.
The strategic focus on former parliamentarians allows for candid advice and open dialogue, reflecting the CAFP’s emphasis on non-partisanship and mutual respect. Discussions are already underway in Mongolia to establish a similar association for former parliamentarians, further enhancing opportunities for mentorship and shared learning.
As Mongolia navigates this pivotal moment, the Canadian delegation’s visit offers concrete opportunities for capacity building, lesson-sharing, and lasting partnerships.
