Japan and Mongolia to Sign Defence Pact Soon
The 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79) has commenced on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, marking the beginning of a series of important discussions and debates on global issues. The high-level General Debate, a key highlight of the session, is set to take place from Tuesday, September 24 to Monday, September 30, 2024. The theme for this year’s debate is centered around the idea of “Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations”.
One notable attendee at the UNGA 79 is the President of Mongolia, U.Khurelsukh, who is scheduled to speak on September 21-26, 2024. During his address, President Khurelsukh will address Mongolia’s stance on pressing international issues, as well as the government’s foreign policy goals and priorities.
In a significant development within the UNGA 79, Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh have come to an agreement to work towards the early signing of a bilateral defense cooperation pact. The two leaders met in New York on Sunday and emphasized the importance of maintaining a free and open international order based on the rule of law, especially in the face of escalating global conflicts and divisions. Both leaders expressed their commitment to expanding cooperation between Japan and Mongolia as “special strategic partners”, with a focus on defense equipment and technology transfer. They intend to finalize and sign the pact at the earliest opportunity.
Additionally, Japan and Mongolia reiterated their joint efforts in addressing the issue of North Korea, with a shared commitment to uphold UN Security Council resolutions. Prime Minister Kishida expressed gratitude to Mongolia for its support and cooperation regarding the matter of North Korea’s abductions of Japanese nationals.
With approximately 140 countries represented by heads of state and government, the 79th session of the UN General Assembly is set to be a platform for crucial diplomatic discussions and collaborations. President U.Khurelsukh’s consistent attendance at the UN General Assembly since 2021 reflects Mongolia’s ongoing engagement with the international community on various global issues.
