Central Asia and the EU Form Strategic Partnership in Samarkand
During the first-ever “Central Asia-EU” summit held in Samarkand on April 4, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the European Union (EU) came together to adopt a declaration on strategic partnership. The declaration highlights the decision to enhance relations in light of the evolving global and regional geopolitical landscape.
The European Council reported that the parties expressed their shared commitment to strengthening relations by considering the changing geopolitical dynamics. They pledged to collaborate towards peace, security, and democracy, emphasizing the importance of upholding international law, including the UN Charter, and respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.
A key focus of the summit was on supporting a secure, stable, and prosperous Afghanistan, governed inclusively and respecting the rights of all citizens. Additionally, the Central Asian countries and the EU agreed to work together to prevent the circumvention of sanctions and enhance regional cooperation through economic forums and events.
Efforts to improve sustainable transport connectivity, combat climate change, protect biodiversity, and enhance water-energy cooperation were also discussed. The parties reaffirmed their commitment to upholding freedom of expression, civil liberties, and human rights, with a specific focus on women, children, and workers.
Overall, the summit marked a significant step in deepening cooperation between Central Asia and the European Union, with both sides expressing readiness to continue working together towards mutual goals and interests in the changing global landscape.
